To get accented letters and the like on a standard layout as well, let's define a compose key.

Get german umlauts by pressing AltGr+{ä,ö,ü,?} or AltGr+{a,o,u,s} when using an US keyboard layout. It's intended to get put anywhere in /usr/share/keymaps/{,i386/}include. So one can easily activate these mappings via `loadkeys umlauts.inc'.
