 grml-live-addons - templates/boot/addons for grml-live
Changes:
 grml-live (0.9.31) unstable; urgency=low
 .
   [ Michael Prokop ]
   * Fix the 'Memtest86+ bootentry doesn't work within GRUB2' issue.
   * Update main fai config (update to what's shipped by FAI 3.3):
     * Move 'FAI_CONFIGDIR=/etc/grml/fai/config' from fai.conf
       to make-fai-nfsroot.conf and disable it by default as
       only FAI_CONFIG_SRC is relevant nowadays.
     * Disable irrelevant 'FAI=/etc/grml/fai/config' in fai.conf by
       default.
     * Drop dhcp-client from exclude option in $FAI_DEBOOTSTRAP_OPTS
       in file make-fai-nfsroot.conf (sync with FAI upstram).
 .
   [ Thorsten Glaser ]
   * Update bootgrub.mksh to 20091104.
   * Change manifold-boot ISO patch logic slightly to work better on
     certain HP machines. [Closes: issue757]

As reported by Ralf: it works. Thanks for the fix, Thorsten.

Thorsten: should we contact upstream of isolinux regarding this issue?

regards,

Partition sizes are always multiples of 512 byte sectors. In fact, sectors
in computing are almost always 512 byte units, even when the underlying
medium uses larger physical sector sizes (e.g. modern HDDs, Flash/SSDs).
The only exceptions I can tell off-hand are physical CD sectors and old
MO drives’.

Short of the HP “BIOS” special-handling a partition type 4, I cease to
have any ideas besides the obvious “it’s ISOLINUX’ fault”.

As another possibility, copy the entire first 32 KiB from the test.iso
over these of the grml ISO, thus replacing MBR/partition table (with
smaller values, but we don’t care here, for now) and GRUB2.
msg2656 (view) Author: de_ramon Date: 2009-11-04.07:16:27
About the partition tables and filesystems:

Standard Blocksizes:
CDFS write 2048 byte in 1 sector
Harddisk write 512 byte in 1 sector

hmm, can this also cause trouble if you dd the iso to the usb-stick?

Mira test ISO ct1.iso does boot on the hp although it has also a partition
table. But Miras cd has an entry for partition table 4, see
mira_test-cd_ct1_partition4.png
msg2652 (view) Author: de_ramon Date: 2009-11-04.06:58:41
Analyzing the CDs that failed showed, that the contain beside the "normal" CDFS
a partition table with 1 entry: partiton 1 (see
grml_2009_10_patched_type_96_partition1.png)
The partition type was for grml_2009.10 originally 83 (linux). I patched the ISO
to 96 (CDFS) (thanks to mira ;-) ), but the CD freezes the hp also. On other PC
the wrong partition entry does not influence grml while booting from USB-Stick:
in both cases grml mounts /live/image as CDF9660.

Thorsten provided additional test isos (Thanks!) (manifold with
ldbsd.com/grub2) and it seems that they work.

So it looks atm as there is a problem with isolinux&manifold/isohybrid.

The HP 8530p provides also EFI / UEFI Boot-Mode.

Booting fails, no matter if UEFI is enabled oder disabled.

The hp 8530p also freezes when inserting following devices:
 * usb-stick containing grmll_2009.10 (installed using dd if=$iso of=$usb-stick)
 * clonezilla-live-1.2.2-31 (which is using isolinux 3.82 + vesamenu)

More details about the failure:
 1. insert cd and power on / reboot
 2. hp starts to read from cd about 1 s
 3. NUM Lock and CAPS Lock LEDs will blink 5 times synchronistically, after 1 s
pause they start again. after doing so 5 times they stop blinking forever. The
HD LED ist blinking very fast the whole time.

More information about the misbehavior of the HP 8530p:
 * fails to start up grml2009.10 with bios 68PDV Ver. F.0F also
 * freezes even if CD-ROM boot is disabled and/or Boot-Order is set to HD first!

Now HP support has to look for it.

Bugreport by Ralf:

If the cd is inserted at system startup, the numlock and keylock LED start
blinking a couple of times and the hdd led is on, too, but isolinux is not
started.

If the bootselection (ESC -> F9) is used, and the cd is inserted you just
before selecting boot from "notebook upgrade bay", the cds starts to boot.
