I can't reproduce this issue in our current daily ISOs anymore, closing therefore.

Just stumbled upon this once again on a machine, this seems to be "fixed" via:

  # dpkg-reconfigure iputils-ping
  Setcap worked! Ping(6) is not suid!

We need a proper fix for this. (Sorry for the long delay in answering your bug
report at all :-/)

Hi,

Using the 2014.11 grml96full image, booting either of the first two
menu entries¹, I cannot ping any target as grml (i.e. non-root):

| grml@grml ~ % ping 127.0.0.1
| ping: icmp open socket: Operation not permitted

Note /bin/ping has permissions -rwxr-xr-x and not -rwsr-xr-x as seen
in a Debian wheezy system. Same for ping6.
