Yes, it's similar, but my idea would require only a binary patch. Maybe it is only redundant, I see that the functionality is already there and I don't know if it would slow the boot process.

It should be a file composed by default by hashes or spaces for a size of ~16KiB, and called as script at the end of the boot process, to personalize the environment in a way tightly binded with the boot media and nothing more.
