Ah, I made a mistake. I agree absolutely that copying /bin & /sbin from the
running system to the target system doesn't make any sense. 

I meant only those from /etc/debootstrap/, so I should have said:

  [ -d ...   ] && cp -a -L /etc/debootstrap/bin/*   $MNTPOINT/bin/

how is that this time?
