JFTR: ft's issue with not being able to use ratpoison is not a ratpoison issue.
It happens also with awesome: I didn't get any window manager I tried to work
properly in KVM if X was started with grml-x. Starting X with startx worked.

And yes, the compatibility with screen is IMHO a big vote for ratpoison. :-)
