The notable difference is that the following modules are present
when udev is used but missing when booting with 'noudev':

ac97_bus
af_packet
agpgart
forcedeth
i2c_nforce2
nvidia_agp
parport
parport_pc
pci_hotplug
pcspkr
rtc
shpchp
snd*
soundcore
tsdev

Any chance to test booting with 'grml blacklist=$MODULE' for (some
of) the above modules?  I assume the most promissing candidates are
pci_hotplug, shpchp, parport_pc and i2c_nforce2.

BTW: Did you manually run 'modprobe usb-storage' when booting with
'noudev' or were the usb modules present without any manual
interaction as well?
