User should just edit /etc/inittab and execute 'telinit q'. If someone implements
that feature we're happily accepting patches, for now this bug will be marked as
dead.

Just test it in in grml-autoconfig. Once. Or provide a udev rule. No
polling involved.

ATM we can't. We don't have the infrastructure in place for setting
generic passwords for arbritary users.

JFTR this is imho the correct behavior as the user doesn't need a
password on the main screen either.

I don't really care about the security of a live cd. If we want to go
there we should also lock down the normal non serial console.

AFAIK it would require some kind of polling (check whether there's a serial
device available) through inittab, I don't think that's something we want to
enable by default if so.

And on the other hand there's the security side. Is the user aware of that and
what about the login data (currently when using the serial boot option no login
data is needed -> change that while at it?)?

Opinions?

Why not enable the console with logins per default?

Would be nice if there's a shortcut to enable the serial console on request if
a system has been booted already.
